This Post Could Be Mathier
While crafting nature runes, I saw a cheeky, little monkey. He did not throw his poop at me and I was grateful.

I could not get spider carcasses, either through buying or killing spiders, so I resorted to dreadfowl and got 16 summoning. It gave me 2 combat levels. Combat 107 = fear me. Mwuhahaha!1!!!!

As to the math. Here is what I figured out cost-wise with summoning (number of shards vs. XP). Oh, and Jagex is halving the price of shards sometime this week. Lol, I read the recent summoning post from the front page and learned summoned creatures are supposed to help me make money. I haven't ever been a fan of summoned creatures since my husband introduced me to Dungeons and Dragons.
Here's a chart (hopefully) with the shards-to-experience ratio:

I used the information available in the KB. Since I'm such a low level, I don't feel comfortable putting up advice on the "best" way to level summoning. Keep in mind that everyone else (and their dog) are out there killing monsters for charms and components. Zybez's Shop Database is a great way to find out if a component is available at a store. Items such as raw beef/rat/chicken, harpoons, jugs of water, bronze claws, bananas and compost are unlimited supplies in some shops. And if you haven't done Hand in the Sand quest yet, this might be a good time to do it for the reward of 84 buckets of sand every 24 hours from Bert.
